What you actually get when you convert a Reel

A Reel has one mixed audio track: the creator's voice, any music they added, and sound effects, all flattened together at upload time. This converter extracts that track and encodes it to MP3. It does not isolate the song from the voice, and it cannot hand you the separate 'original audio' file that Instagram links to from the Reel's audio page.

That distinction matters. If a Reel uses a trending track with no voiceover, you will get the song at whatever quality Instagram kept. If someone is talking over the music, you get both, exactly as a viewer hears it. If you need a clean instrumental, look for the track on a streaming service or ask the creator.

Which Reel links work

Any public Reel works, whether the link looks like instagram.com/reel/CODE or instagram.com/reels/CODE. Share-sheet links carry tracking parameters such as igsh or utm_source, and these are stripped automatically before anything is requested.

Reels from private accounts, deleted Reels and Reels removed for rights reasons return an error, and this tool does not try to get around that. A quick test: open the link in a private browsing window. If you can watch it logged out, it will convert.

Choosing 128, 192 or 320 kbps for Reel audio

Instagram compresses audio when a Reel is uploaded, typically to an AAC stream well below 320 kbps. Choosing 320 kbps therefore does not restore detail, it simply avoids adding a second round of compression loss when the audio is re-encoded to MP3.

  • 128 kbps: voiceovers, interviews, podcasts clipped into Reels. A one-minute file is roughly 1 MB.
  • 192 kbps: the sensible default for music and mixed content, about 1.4 MB per minute.
  • 320 kbps: best for audio you will edit further, about 2.4 MB per minute.

Common uses for Reel audio

People convert their own Reels when they have lost the original project file, and they use the MP3 as a reference to transcribe spoken content or to sync captions. Editors sometimes pull a track to check tempo or key before licensing it properly. Listeners keep a talk or a lecture clip for offline playback.

What you can do with the file afterwards is a separate matter. Audio on Reels is usually copyrighted by the creator or a label, and converting it does not grant you a licence. Read the terms of service page before republishing anything.

How do I convert an Instagram Reel to MP3?

Can I get the original sound from a Reel without the voiceover?

No. The converter extracts the single mixed audio track that Instagram stores for the Reel. Separate stems are not available from the public video.

Why does my Reel link say it could not be processed?

The most common causes are a private account, a deleted Reel, a link to a profile rather than a specific Reel, or a Reel with no audio. If it plays in a private browsing window, try again in a minute.

Is the output a real MP3 or a renamed video?

A real MP3. Audio is decoded and encoded with the LAME encoder at 44.1 kHz, rather than renaming an MP4.

Is it legal to convert Reel audio?
