Standard video posts live at instagram.com/p/CODE. If the post is a carousel with several clips, the converter uses the first video in the set. Longer uploads that used to be called IGTV, and live replays saved to a profile, convert the same way, although very long files can time out on slow connections.

For long recordings, bitrate is the lever that matters. Twenty minutes at 320 kbps is roughly 48 MB. The same twenty minutes at 128 kbps is about 19 MB, and for someone speaking you will rarely hear the difference.

How the conversion works

When you paste a link, the server resolves the public video with yt-dlp and reads its metadata: title, author, duration and thumbnail. When you press download, the best available audio stream is piped through ffmpeg, which encodes MP3 with the LAME encoder at the bitrate you chose, 44.1 kHz. Nothing is written to disk, and both processes are stopped as soon as the stream ends or you cancel.

That is why the download starts immediately rather than after a progress bar. It is also why a second press of the button re-encodes from scratch instead of serving a cached file.

Video to MP3 versus other ways of getting the audio

Renaming an MP4 to MP3 does not work. The container still holds video, and many players will refuse or misplay it. Screen recording captures system sounds and notifications along with the audio and lowers quality. Desktop editors can extract audio cleanly, but you must first download the whole video, which takes longer and uses more storage.

• Online converter: fastest for one-off needs, no install, audio only.
• Video editor: best when you also want to trim or normalise the sound.
• Screen recording: last resort, lowest quality.
• File renaming: does not produce a valid MP3.

Limits worth knowing

Only public posts resolve. Private accounts, deleted posts and age-restricted videos return an error. Videos with no sound track return a clear 'no audio' message rather than an empty file. Requests are rate limited per network, so bulk conversion of hundreds of links is not supported.
