What works for Stories

A public Story can be converted for up to 24 hours after it is posted, as long as you have its direct link. Story links look like instagram.com/stories/username/ID. A link to a profile or to the Stories ring without an ID cannot be resolved, because there is no single media item to point at.

Highlights are saved Stories that stay on a profile. They use a different link format and are more likely to resolve than expired Stories, but they still depend on the account being public.

Why Story links fail more often

Instagram treats Stories as logged-in content more aggressively than Reels or feed posts, so a request without a session is refused more often. When a Story fails here, it is usually for one of these reasons:

• The Story expired after 24 hours and was not added to a Highlight.
• The account is private or the Story is limited to Close Friends.
• The link is a profile URL, not a specific Story URL.
• Instagram asked for a login for that particular request.

Story audio: what to expect

Many Stories have music from Instagram's library attached as a sticker. In some cases that music is played by the app and is not part of the video file itself, so the extracted audio can be silent or contain only the person's voice. A Story with no audio track returns a clear 'no audio' message instead of an empty file.

If you want the sound of a Story you posted yourself, the most reliable route is to save the original video from your camera roll or from Instagram's own Archive and convert that.

Respecting the creator

Stories are meant to be temporary. Saving one for personal reference is different from reposting it. Always ask before reusing someone else's voice or music, and do not use converted audio to impersonate or harass anyone. The terms of service page explains what is and is not permitted.
